Idaho's Steelhead Returns Soar: The Best in 7 Years

Written by Trent Jones

Steelhead returns in Idaho have reached over 97,000—marking the highest number in the past seven years. With expectations for a return surpassing 100,000, this year's steelhead migration is shaping up to be one of the best since 2015.

The steelhead, which begin arriving in late summer, are spread across Idaho rivers, including those in Lewiston, Riggins, Salmon, and Challis. In addition to higher numbers, fisheries managers are also reporting larger fish this year. With over 80% of returning steelhead having spent two years in the ocean, anglers can expect to catch bigger fish in the fall and next spring.
