How to Tie the Jigged Zebra Midge | Fly Tying for Beginners
From: AvidMax
A staple for any fly box, the Jigged Zebra Midge is a must-have for year-round success, especially on most tail waters —simple, effective, and deadly on trout.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep the Hook
Secure your jig hook (e.g., Umpqua XT500, size 18) in the vise.
Smash the barb if desired.
Slide on a 2.5mm tungsten bead (Firehole Birthday Suit for a subtle, naked tungsten look).
2. Start the Thread Base
Using UTC 70 black thread, make smooth, even wraps from the bead to slightly down the bend of the hook.
Keep the thread as flat as possible for a clean, slim body.
3. Tie in the Ribbing
Cut a piece of small UTC copper wire.
Secure it at the back of the hook with tight wraps, making sure it lays straight along the hook shank.
4. Build the Thread Body
Continue wrapping your thread forward, creating a slim and even body.
Give the bobbin a spin to keep the thread flat and smooth.
5. Wrap the Wire Ribbing
Counter-wrap the wire forward in evenly spaced turns, securing it at the head.
Helicopter off the excess wire.
6. Whip Finish
Add a couple of whip finishes to secure the thread, ensuring a durable fly.
Trim the thread cleanly.
7. Apply UV Resin (Optional for Durability)
Apply a thin coat of Solarez Bone Dry Plus over the body to enhance durability and create a slight sheen.
Use a bodkin to remove any air bubbles.
Cure with a UV light until hardened.
8. Final Touches
If needed, clear the hook eye of any excess resin using a needle or clippers.
Give it one final zap with the UV light.
