Eel River Revival: New Agreement Restores Salmon & Steelhead Habitat

With: Trout Unlimited

The Eel River is getting a much-needed revival! After over a century of water battles that left its legendary salmon and steelhead runs struggling, a new agreement is paving the way for recovery. With PG&E removing the Potter Valley Project’s dams, fish will finally regain access to prime spawning grounds.

The deal, struck between tribes, conservationists, and water users, ensures a balanced approach—Russian River communities will still get water, but at reduced levels, while the Round Valley Indian Tribes receive water rights and funding for habitat restoration. And with California kicking in $18 million to get things rolling, it’s a big step forward for both fish and folks who depend on these rivers.

For anglers, this means a future where the Eel could once again become the steelhead paradise it once was. Trout Unlimited played a key role in securing the agreement, making sure the science-backed plan keeps enough water in the river to support fish populations. Over the next few decades, the river will see habitat improvements and careful monitoring to ensure salmon and steelhead thrive. It’s not just about restoring a river—it’s about honoring the history, culture, and ecosystems that make the Eel River so special.
