Step-by-Step Guide: UV Don King Midge

This simple and effective midge pattern, the UV Don King Midge, is perfect for winter fishing and is quick to tie once you get the hang of it. Here’s how to tie it.

Materials:

  • Hook: Size 16, 2488

  • Thread: 18/0 Classic Waxed Black

  • Wire: UTC Silver Small

  • Wing: Crystal Flash (Pearl)

  • Dubbing: Hairline Adams Gray Superfine Dubbing

Step By Step Guide:

1. Set up your hook and thread

  • Secure the hook (size 16, 2488) in your vise.

  • Start your 18/0 Classic Waxed Black thread right behind the eye of the hook.

2. Attach the silver wire

  • Tie in a small piece of UTC Silver Small wire on the near side of the hook.

  • Wrap the wire down to the bend of the hook with clean, even wraps.

3. Create the wire segmentation

  • Wrap the wire back up towards the hook eye, creating segmentation.

  • Lock the wire in place and helicopter it off to remove the excess.

4. Prepare the wing

  • Take one strand of Crystal Flash (Pearl) and cut it into four equal pieces.

  • Gather the pieces into a bundle and trim them flush at one end.

  • Tie the Crystal Flash behind the eye of the hook, then pull it back and trim the wing to your desired length.

5. Add the dubbing

  • Take a small pinch of Hairline Adams Gray Superfine Dubbing and form a thin noodle on your thread.

  • Wrap the dubbing around the hook in front of the Crystal Flash, building a small head.

6. Finish the fly

  • Once you’re happy with the head, whip finish the fly and trim any excess thread.
