Step-by-Step Guide:
Position the Hook:
Place the hook securely in the fly tying vise. Ensure it is centered and held firmly.
Thread Setup:
Load the fly tying bobbin with thread.
Begin wrapping the thread onto the hook shank, starting near the eye and working towards the bend.
Wrap the Thread:
Make smooth, touching wraps with the thread along the hook shank. This creates a solid foundation for the whip finish.
Position the Thread:
Stop wrapping when you have reached a point just behind the hook eye. Leave enough space to comfortably work with.
Whip Finish Tool:
Use a whip finish tool. It has a small metal or plastic handle and a notched or angled end.
Insert the Thread:
Place the thread into the notch of the whip finish tool.
Make the First Half Hitch:
Rotate the whip finish tool away from you, creating a loop of thread over the hook eye. This is the first half of the whip finish.
Make the Second Half Hitch:
Rotate the whip finish tool towards you, completing the loop. This is the second half of the whip finish.
Secure the Whip Finish:
Gently slide the whip finish tool off the thread, and the loop will tighten around the hook shank.
Trim the Thread:
Use fly tying scissors to trim the excess thread, leaving a neat and clean head on the fly.
