Steps by Step Guide: Fly Tying for Beginners The SQUIRMY WORMY

Featuring : Mad River Outfitters

The Squirmy Wormy fly pattern – a controversial yet highly effective fly that has been proven to produce results on the water.

In this step-by-step guide, we'll show you some techniques needed to tie this pattern effectively, addressing the Squirmy Wormy material. Let's get started!

Materials Needed:

  1. Hook: Scud style hook, size 12 (e.g., 2457).

  2. Thread: thread in a suitable color (e.g., Pink, Chartreuse).

  3. Body: Squirmy Wormy material

  4. Adhesive: UV finish.

Step 1: Secure the Hook

Place the hook securely in the vise.

Step 2: Prepare Squirmy Wormy Material

Cut a piece of Squirmy Wormy material to about two and a quarter inches long. This length is determined by measuring the jaw length of the vise, ensuring the material is long enough.

Step 3: Start the Thread

Start the thread near the hook eye and run it down the hook shank, leaving a bit of space behind the hook barb.

Step 4: Tie in the Squirmy Wormy Material

Position the Squirmy Wormy material in the middle of the hook shank. Make loose wraps to secure it in place, adjusting as needed. Ensure the material is not under heavy tension.

Step 5: Wrap the Squirmy Wormy Material

Wrap the thread over the Squirmy Wormy material, folding it back with each wrap. The goal is to pinch the material between the thread wraps rather than tightly wrapping over it.

Step 6: Continue Wrapping

Repeat the wrapping process, making sure the material is evenly distributed along the hook shank. Use light tension to avoid cutting through the Squirmy Wormy material.

Step 7: Finish the Fly

After wrapping the material, secure the thread with a few tight wraps. Use a whip finish tool to create a whip finish and trim the excess thread.

Step 8: Apply Adhesive

Apply Loon UV finish to the thread wraps to ensure durability and prevent the material from slipping. Use a bodkin to spread the adhesive evenly.

Step 10: Final Touches

Inspect the fly to ensure all materials are securely attached and the thread wraps are coated with adhesive. Your Squirmy Wormy fly is now ready for action!

This simple yet controversial pattern can be highly productive when tied correctly. Experiment with different colors and sizes to match the preferences of your target fish species. Enjoy tying and tight lines!
