Steps by Step Guide: Fly Tying for Beginners The Mop Fly

Featuring : Mad River Outfitters

Introducing The Mop Fly, a quick and easy pattern that's highly effective on the water.

All you need are a few basic materials: a scud hook, a bead, mop chenille, ice dub, and some adhesive.

Learn how to create this essential addition to any fly box. Let's get started!

Materials Needed:

  1. Hook: scud hook.

  2. Bead: bead, black nickel.

  3. Body: Mop chenille, light tan or gray.

  4. Thorax: Ice dub, UV brown.

  5. Adhesive: Superglue or Zappa gap.

Step 1: Set Up

Secure the scud hook in the vise, ensuring it's held firmly.

Step 2: Add Bead

Place the 3/16 sized bead onto the hook, small hole first, and force it over the hook point until it's seated securely against the hook eye.

Step 3: Start Thread

Select a thread that matches the body color, such as light tan or gray, and begin wrapping it onto the hook shank. Trim off any tag end.

Step 4: Prepare Mop Material

Take a piece of mop chenille, about an inch in length, and apply a small amount of Zappa gap to one end. Roll the chenille between your fingers to lock it in place.

Step 5: Tie in Mop Material

Attach the mop chenille to the hook shank with a couple of loose wraps, ensuring it's roughly twice the length of the hook shank. Tighten the wraps to secure the chenille in place, then trim off any excess.

Step 6: Create Thorax

Wrap the thread forward to create a thorax area just behind the bead. Double up on the ice dubbing and wrap it onto the thread, then wrap it around the hook shank to form the thorax.

Step 7: Finish Fly

Work the thread up to the bead, create a half hitch, and cut off the excess thread. Your 2-Minute Mop Fly is now complete!

Outro: This simple yet effective fly can be tied in various colors to match different aquatic insects. Whether you tie your own or purchase them, mop flies are inexpensive and effective.
