Featuring : tightlinevideo
Lefty's Deceiver – a legendary saltwater fly pattern renowned for its versatility and effectiveness in imitating baitfish.
In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of tying this fly, developed by the legendary angler Lefty Kreh.
Let's dive in and elevate your saltwater fly fishing game with this timeless pattern!
Materials Needed:
Hook: Saltwater streamer hook, sizes 2 to 6.
Thread: Strong thread, 3/0 to 6/0 in a suitable color (e.g., white, chartreuse).
Tail: Bucktail or synthetic hair in desired colors (e.g., white, chartreuse, pink).
Body: Tinsel or flashy material (optional).
Flash: Flashabou or similar flashy material.
Wing: Bucktail or synthetic hair in contrasting colors.
Throat: Hackle feathers or synthetic fibers (optional).
Eyes: Stick-on or painted eyes.
Adhesive: Superglue or UV resin.
Step 1: Secure the Hook
Place the hook securely in your vise and start the thread wraps near the eye of the hook. Wrap the thread back along the shank to just above the hook point.
Step 2: Tie in the Tail
Select a few clumps of bucktail or synthetic hair for the tail of the fly. Choose colors that match the natural baitfish in the area you'll be fishing. Trim away any excess underfur or short hairs and align the tips of the fibers.
Tie in the tail material on top of the hook shank, extending it back to about the length of the hook shank. The tail should be sparse and flow naturally in the water.
Step 3: Add Flash
Tie in a few strands of flashabou or similar flashy material on top of the tail. This will add extra attraction and mimic the shimmer of baitfish scales.
Step 4: Form the Body (Optional)
If desired, tie in a piece of tinsel or flashy material at the base of the tail and wrap it forward to create a flashy body. This step is optional but can enhance the fly's visibility and appeal to fish.
Step 5: Prepare the Wing
Select two or more clumps of bucktail or synthetic hair for the wing of the fly. Choose contrasting colors that mimic the natural baitfish in the area you'll be fishing. Trim away any excess underfur or short hairs and align the tips of the fibers.
Step 6: Tie in the Wing
Tie in the first clump of wing material on top of the hook shank, just in front of the tail. The wing material should extend back to about the length of the tail.
Tie in the second clump of wing material on top of the hook shank, just in front of the first clump. The second clump should be slightly shorter than the first clump.
Step 7: Add Throat
Tie in a few hackle feathers or synthetic fibers at the base of the wing, just below the hook shank. The throat material should extend downward and add extra movement to the fly.
Step 8: Attach Eyes (Optional)
Stick on or paint eyes onto each side of the hook shank, just behind the hook eye. The eyes should be positioned symmetrically and give the fly a lifelike appearance.
Step 9: Secure and Finish
Secure all materials with several tight wraps of thread, making sure everything is firmly in place. Build up a small thread head in front of the eyes and whip finish the thread. Trim away any excess thread.
Step 10: Apply Adhesive
Apply a small amount of superglue or UV resin to the thread wraps securing the eyes and the thread head. This will add extra durability to the fly and ensure the materials stay in place during fishing.
Step 11: Final Touches
Trim the tail, wings, and throat to the desired length, keeping them proportionate to the size of the fly. Your Lefty's Deceiver is now complete and ready to entice a wide variety of saltwater species, including striped bass, bluefish, and tarpon!
