How to Tie the Bunny Leech | Fly Tying Tutorial

The Bunny Leech is an easy-to-tie, fish-catching guide fly that works for bass, trout, steelhead, and more. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned angler, this pattern is a must-have in your fly box.

Materials:

  • Rabbit Zonker Strip (your choice of color, chartreuse is a popular option)

  • Thread (matching the color of the zonker strip, use a heavier thread like bass bug thread)

  • Hook (Gamakatsu B10S size 1, or similar)

  • Optional: Lead wire or bead head for added weight

  • Loon Clear Finish Flow (UV resin for durability)

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Secure the Thread

  • Begin by attaching the thread to the hook shank, starting just behind the hook eye.

  • Wrap the thread back to a point slightly behind the hook point.

Step 2: Prepare the Tail

  • Cut a piece of rabbit zonker strip for the tail, slightly longer than the hook shank.

  • Lay the strip on top of the hook shank and secure it with tight wraps of thread.

Step 3: Add the Body

  • Take the remaining piece of zonker strip and figure out the direction the fur lays naturally.

  • Tie it in at the back of the hook so the fur will lay back when you start wrapping.

  • Make tight wraps to secure the zonker strip, then begin wrapping it forward along the hook shank.

Step 4: Wrap the Body

  • As you wrap the zonker strip, make sure to stroke the fibers back with each wrap to prevent them from getting trapped.

  • Continue wrapping until you reach the hook eye, leaving just a small space for finishing.

Step 5: Secure the Body

  • Once you've wrapped the zonker strip to the hook eye, secure it with a few tight thread wraps.

  • Trim the excess zonker strip, making sure to leave the fibers of the tail and body intact.

Step 6: Whip Finish and Cement

  • Whip finish the fly by making two wraps to secure the thread.

  • Apply a small drop of Loon Clear Finish Flow to the head of the fly and cure it with a UV light for a smooth, durable finish.

Step 7: Final Touch

  • Trim any stray fibers, and your Bunny Leech is ready to hit the water!
