How to tie: a Royal Coachman
With: Tuckaseegee Fly Shop
In this fly-tying tutorial, you'll learn how to craft a beautiful and durable Royal Coachman with step-by-step instructions, you'll master creating wings, setting materials, and wrapping the perfect fly.
Materials Needed:
White feathers (discarded ones work great)
Golden pheasant tippet (for tail detail)
Peacock herl (for body)
Midge body thread (instead of floss for the band)
Furnace hackle (for hackle)
Instructions:
Preparing the Hook and Thread:
Use a size 12 hook (though 14 and 16 also work).
Begin by setting up a thread base and positioning it where the wings will be placed.
Creating the Wings:
Strip the webby parts of a white feather with your fingers.
Use fingernail clippers to cut the feather, forming the wings. Cut in a way that follows the feather’s natural curve.
Place the trimmed wings on top of the hook, securing them with a few loose wraps.
Tail Preparation:
For the tail, use golden pheasant tippet. Cut a few fibers and tie them on top of the hook, making sure they sit evenly.
Building the Body:
Tie in peacock herl and wrap it up the body of the fly.
For the midsection, use red midge body thread to create a band. This strengthens the fly and adds a bright contrast.
Continue with the peacock herl to finish the body.
Hackle:
Strip the lower part of the furnace hackle for a cleaner tie.
Tie in the hackle, ensuring the dull side faces you.
Wrap the hackle carefully, making sure it lies flat and neat.
Final Touches:
Use your whip finish tool to secure the thread.
Trim any excess material for a clean finish.
