Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hook and Thread:

    • Secure a size 16 dry fly hook in your vise.

    • Start your thread (Vives 10/0 in brown) about halfway down the hook shank. Trim off the tag end and bring your thread back to the bend of the hook.

  2. Tie in the Tail:

    • Select tail fibers from a grizzly and a brown rooster cape. Align the tips of the fibers and trim them to match.

    • Measure the tail fibers to be about the length of the hook shank and tie them in with a pinch wrap.

    • Trim the tag ends and clean up the section with thread wraps.

  3. Add the Dubbing:

    • Use UV2 Fine and Dry Dubbing in Adams gray to create a tapered noodle on your thread.

    • Wrap the dubbing around the hook shank, creating a tapered body up to about two-thirds of the way up the hook.

  4. Prepare and Attach the Post:

    • Cut a small section of poly Pro yarn for the post material. Wrap it around the thread and place it on top of the hook shank.

    • Secure the post with tight wraps, both in front and behind. Pull the post upward and continue wrapping up the material. Trim the post to be roughly the length of the hook shank.

  5. Attach the Hackles:

    • Prepare size 14 grizzly and brown hackles by stripping fibers from the stems. Align the hackles and trim the tips.

    • Tie the hackles in on the side of the fly facing you. Wrap the thread around the post and tie the hackles upward.

  6. Finish the Fly:

    • Dub a bit more Adams gray dubbing around the hook, creating a small thorax.

    • Wrap the hackle around the post and capture it with thread. Trim off any excess hackle.

    • Whip finish the fly beneath the hackle and on the parachute post. Apply a small amount of head cement to the whip finish.

  7. Trim and Adjust:

    • Trim any stray hackle fibers. Ensure the hackle and post are neatly arranged.
