How to Tie the Jack Daniels CDC Bug
With: vidMax
The Jack Daniels CDC Bug is a dynamic fly pattern perfect for both dropper rigs and Euro nymphing. This fly has incredible movement, making it a great option for targeting trout.
Materials:
Hook: MFC Tactical Jig Hook, Wide Gape 60
Bead: 7/64 Tungsten Bead, Gold (copper is traditional, but gold works too)
Thread: UTC 70, White
Ribbing: Brassy Black Wire (alternative to thread rib)
Body Resin: Zap UV Ultra Thin
Dubbing: Peacock Ice Dub
CDC Feathers: For the body hackle
Step-by-Step Guide: Tying the Jack Daniels CDC Bug
Step 1: Secure the Hook and Bead
Start by securing your MFC Tactical Jig Hook in the vise. Thread your UTC 70 white thread behind the tungsten bead.
Create a thread dam behind the bead to lock it in place, then trim the excess thread.
Step 2: Add the Ribbing Wire
Tie in the brassy black wire at the hook’s rear, and then wrap your thread down the hook shank towards the bend.
Work the thread back up to the bead to create a slight taper.
Wrap the wire forward in evenly spaced turns. When you reach the top, secure the wire with a few thread wraps and helicopter the wire off.
Step 3: Apply UV Resin to the Body
Coat the body of the fly with Zap UV Ultra Thin resin. This gives the fly a durable, shiny finish.
Cure the resin using a UV light.
Step 4: Prepare and Apply the CDC Feathers
Create a dubbing loop and insert CDC feathers. Spin the loop to ensure the CDC flares out.
Begin wrapping the CDC forward, pushing the fibers back to add volume. Secure it with a few wraps and trim off any excess loop.
Step 5: Add the Dubbing Collar
Create a small dubbing noodle with peacock ice dub. Add just a small amount to form a subtle collar at the bead.
Finish the fly with a whip finish.
Step 6: Final Touches
Trim any excess thread, and your Jack Daniels CDC Bug is ready to hit the water!
