How to Tie : the Ice Prince Nymph

With: Savage Flies

The Ice Prince Nymph is a super easy-to-tie pattern that combines the look of a classic Prince Nymph with some simple adjustments. Ideal for those quick fishing trips, it’s a simple nymph that can still catch fish in a pinch.

Materials Needed:

  • Size 14, 1X long barbless nymph hook

  • 2.4mm regular bead (not Tungsten)

  • 015 lead wire for weight

  • Black 70 denier thread

  • Ice Dub (peacock color)

  • White Goose biots

  • Head cement (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Prepare the Hook

Start with a size 14, 1X long barbless nymph hook. Slide a 2.4mm regular bead onto the hook and secure it in place with thread.

Add Weight

Wrap approximately 6 turns of 015 lead wire around the hook shank to add weight and help secure the bead. Be sure to wrap it right behind the bead.

Thread Base

Apply black 70 denier thread behind the lead wraps and take it back to the bend of the hook, securing the weight in place. Add a little thread wax for better dubbing application.

Dub the Body

Use peacock Ice Dub and create a thin noodle. Start at the back of the hook and work your way forward, covering the body up to the bead. You may need two applications of dubbing.

Tie in the Goose Biots

Take two white Goose biots and align them at a 30° angle. Pinch them in place with your fingers and make a few wraps to secure them in position. Make sure the biots are slightly separated to form a wing.

Secure and Trim the Biots

Once the biots are in place, make a few tight wraps to secure them fully. Trim any excess biot ends, leaving a little bit of length for wrapping with thread.

Finishing Touches

Make several wraps of thread to cover the biot stubs and fill any gaps behind the bead. Complete with a whip finish.

Optional: Apply Head Cement

If desired, add a drop of head cement on the top of the bead to help secure the wraps and wick it into place.
