How to Tie an EZ Bloodworm Pattern for Stillwater Fishing

With: House Of Fly

The bloodworm is a highly effective pattern for stillwater fishing, often used to mimic the larvae of midges. This simple yet powerful fly is quick to tie and can be adjusted in size to match various fishing conditions.

Materials Needed:

  • Size 12 Tiemco 23-12 hook (straight eye)

  • 70 denier Altis red thread

  • Small ultra wire (silver, copper, or your preferred color)

  • Loon UV Fly Finish (clear, flow)

  • Sharpie (black)

Step-by-Step Guide:

Prepare the Hook:

Start with a size 12 Tiemco 23-12 hook. Secure it in your vice with the hook eye facing you for better action when using a loop knot.

Tie in the Thread:

Begin by wrapping 70 denier Altis red thread on the hook. Extend the thread all the way into the bend to give the illusion of a curved tail.

Attach the Wire:

Take the small ultra wire (silver or copper) and tie it in with the hook facing towards you. Secure the wire along the side of the hook to form the body segments.

Form the Body Segments:

Wrap the wire evenly around the hook, creating approximately seven segments. Keep the wraps close and tight for a clean look. Secure the wire at the head with a few tight thread wraps.

Create the Head:

Build a small, smooth head using thread wraps. Avoid making the head too large or too bulky; the goal is to create a subtle, tapered look.

Finish the Fly:

Tie off the thread with a whip finish. Trim any excess thread.

Color the Head:

Use a black Sharpie to lightly color the top of the head, giving the fly an illusion of a darker head.

Apply UV Resin:

Coat the entire fly with a light layer of Loon UV Fly Finish (clear, flow) to seal the materials and give the fly durability. Cure the resin under UV light.
