How to Tie a Simple and Effective Midge Fly for Trout Fishing
With: TroutFlies
This super simple midge fly is a go-to when you’re not sure what the fish are feeding on. It’s small, effective, and has likely caught more fish than any other pattern in my fly box.
Materials Needed:
Daiichi 1130 Curved Nymph Hook (size 18, 20, or 22)
70 Denier UTC Black Thread
Stripped UV Clear Body (use a pink pencil eraser to strip fibers)
UV Clear Thin Resin
Steel Flash (in a pure color)
Whip Finish Tool
UV Light for Curing
Step-by-Step Guide: Tying the Ultimate Midge Fly Pattern
1. Set Up Your Hook and Thread
Start by securing your Daiichi 1130 curved nymph hook in the vise. Use 70 denier UTC thread in black and wrap it down the hook shank, making sure to go all the way down into the bend.
2. Tie in Stripped UV Clear Body
Take the stripped UV clear body material (using a pink pencil eraser to strip fibers) and tie it in at the bend of the hook. Wind it forward in close, touching wraps to the eye of the hook.
3. Secure the Body and Trim Excess
Once you’ve wrapped the body material to the hook’s eye, secure it with a few tight wraps of thread and trim off the excess material.
4. Apply UV Resin
Place a drop of UV clear thin resin onto the body, making sure it covers all of the wraps. Use your UV light to cure it in place for a few seconds.
5. Tie in Steel Flash Wings
Cut a short section of steel flash in a pure color. Tie it in on top of the hook, ensuring the strands splay out a bit for that perfect wing effect.
6. Whip Finish the Fly
Use your whip finish tool to build a small head with five or six wraps. Once secure, trim the thread and use a drop of resin to seal the finish.
7. Final Touches
After curing with the UV light, check the fly for any adjustments or final touch-ups.
