Techniques for Un-Snagging from the Bottom: Fly Fishing Woes

With: Tom Rosenbauer

Tom Rosenbauer shows us some simple techniques for getting our fly back after snagging bottom.

Here are some of our favorite techniques:

  1. Rod Tip Shake:

    • Hold the rod tip close to the water and shake it back and forth. This can transmit vibrations to the line and fly, potentially causing it to come loose.

  2. Side Pressure:

    • Try applying side pressure to the line by moving the rod to the side, pulling parallel to the water. This can change the angle of pull and help release the fly.

  3. Pulse Retrieval:

    • Use a pulsing retrieve, where you gently pull and release the line in short, rhythmic motions. This can sometimes wiggle the fly out of the snag.

  4. Change Angle:

    • Move to a different angle relative to the snag and try pulling from that direction. A change in angle can sometimes alter the forces acting on the fly.
