How to Tie the Tying a Fire Tiger Perch Fly | Step-by-Step Guide
From: Ryan Houston
Ryan Houston brings us the scaled-down Fire Tiger perch fly is perfect for big perch, offering durability and movement to attract predatory fish,
Materials List:
1/0 Sakuma 470 Hook (short shank)
Gel super glue
Mirage Pearl Flash (12-14 inches long)
Lure Flash Mobile (silver)
Fluorescent chartreuse hackle
Neon yellow Connect line
Grizzle neck feather (fluorescent chartreuse)
Black Arctic Fox fur
Hot orange Arctic Fox fur
Super glue
Eyes (3mm silver)
Two-part epoxy
Black glitter (optional)
Step By Step Guide:
1. Prepare the Hook and Thread:
Start with a 1/0 Sakuma 470 hook.
Apply a small amount of gel super glue to the hook shank to secure the thread.
2. Tie the Tail:
Take 3-4 strands of Mirage Pearl Flash (about 12-14 inches long) and fold them in half.
Tie them to the shank roughly 3/4 of the way along its length, and fold the short ends back on themselves to create a tapered tail.
3. Add the Lure Flash Mobile:
Take 6-8 strands of Lure Flash Mobile (silver), fold them over, and tie them onto the tail.
Splay them around the hook shank and tighten into place, then fold the short ends back and tie a dam to hold them in place.
4. Add the Hackle for Support:
Tie in fluorescent chartreuse hackle to create an internal "umbrella" of support for the fly.
Wrap the hackle on the hook, alternating between turning in front and behind the thread to provide extra stability.
5. Tie in the Connect Line Body:
Use a small amount of neon yellow Connect line to create the body. Misalign the bunches and tie them across the middle of the shank.
Trim the ends into a random taper and fold them back to create a natural shape.
6. Add the Grizzle Neck Feather:
Take two feathers from a grizzle neck dyed in fluorescent chartreuse.
Tie them on either side of the hook to create tiger stripes with the neon green color.
7. Add the Arctic Fox Fur for the Body:
For a more mobile fly, use black Arctic Fox fur. Pull out the shortest fibers and layer them on top of the hook.
Tie the fur in, keeping the fibers pointing backward.
8. Add the Second Layer of Arctic Fox Fur:
Use hot orange Arctic Fox fur for the underside of the fly. Repeat the process of pulling out short fibers and layering them on the hook.
Tie it down to meet the black fur for a balanced body.
9. Shape and Secure the Head:
Brush back all the fur, ensuring it points backward under tension. Apply super glue to the head area to hold the fibers in place.
Use a straw to press down the fur and create a flat head profile.
10. Add the Eyes:
Mix the two-part epoxy with black glitter (optional) and apply it to the head area.
Attach 3mm silver eyes using the epoxy, pressing the back edge of the eyes into the mixture for a secure hold.
Allow the epoxy to dry, using a rotary fly dryer to prevent sagging.
