How to tie: a Bunny Leech
With: Loon Outdoors
The Bunny Leech is a streamer pattern perfect for targeting trout, steelhead, and other game fish, offering an amazing profile and great movement in the water.
Materials Needed:
Hook: Size 6 streamer hook
Bead: 3/16 inch gold bead
Thread: Black 6/0
Tail Material: Black cross-cut rabbit strip
Flash: Crystal flash (3 strands)
Head Cement: For securing the head
Instructions:
Prepare the Hook:
Secure the size 6 streamer hook in the vise. Slide the 3/16 inch gold bead onto the hook, positioning it near the eye.
Start the Thread:
Attach the black 6/0 thread to the hook shank and wrap it down to the hook bend with connecting turns. This creates a solid base for the materials.
Prepare the Rabbit Strip:
Cut a black rabbit strip into a V shape at one end. This V cut will taper the tail nicely. Measure about 3/16 to 1/4 inch of the strip and secure it at the tail of the hook.
Wrap the Body:
Use the cross-cut rabbit strip to create the body. Wrap the strip around the hook shank, ensuring that the hair lays back with each turn. Make sure to secure the strip firmly with each wrap to prevent it from coming loose.
Trim Excess Material:
Once the body is wrapped to the desired fullness, trim off any excess rabbit hide at the rear of the hook. This will leave a neat thread collar near the bead.
Add Crystal Flash:
Select 3 strands of crystal flash and fold them in half over the thread. Tie them in on either side of the hook shank. Trim the flash to just past the end of the rabbit strip for a balanced look.
Finish the Fly:
Perform a whip finish to secure the thread. Apply a small amount of head cement to the thread and bead area. This will dry clear and create a durable bond.
Final Touches:
Check the fly for any loose fibers or uneven areas. Adjust as needed to ensure a tidy and effective pattern.
