Bully for the Forest: Forest Service proposes policy protecting old-growth forests

Two weeks ago, the Forest Service proposed a new policy that is protective of old growth forests on our publicly owned 191 million acres of national forests.

This proposal brings positive developments, especially considering the vital role old growth forests play in carbon storage and providing essential habitats for diverse wildlife, including fish.

It's crucial to emphasize that the suggested measures don't hinder active forest management, including timber harvest.

In some specific situations, such as managing the understory of younger trees, there may be a need to thin them to reduce "ladder fuels," preventing flames from reaching the branches of taller older trees.

The primary objective here is to establish uniform and effective management practices for these forests on a national scale.
