Mastering Flats Fishing | Targeting Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon tips for New Anglers
With : christian.permit
We recently caught up with Christian, a flats fishing guide who specializes in chasing down bonefish, permit, and tarpon. In this interview, Christian dives into what makes flats fishing so special, his top tips for beginners, and one wild story that perfectly sums up why we love this sport.
Christian, how did you first get into fly fishing, and what inspired you to become a guide specializing in flats fishing for species like bonefish, permit, and tarpon?
"My first fly fishing experience was with a close friend from Colorado who gifted me my first rod when I was 18. Before becoming a guide, I spent years honing my skills on the water. For me, the greatest reward is seeing a client step off my boat with a big smile. It’s not just about catching fish—it’s about creating memories that last a lifetime. Sharing my passion for fly fishing with others is what makes this journey so meaningful."
As a guide, what do you find most rewarding about sharing your passion for flats fishing with your clients?
"My greatest reward is having clients return for my services and recommend me to their friends. There's nothing more fulfilling than knowing I've helped create memorable experiences on the water. Building those lasting connections is what keeps me passionate about what I do."
Can you share your favorite techniques or strategies for successfully targeting permit in the flats?
One of my key techniques for targeting permit on the flats is paying close attention to the weather and tides—they dictate so much of the fish's behavior. I also make sure my clients are tuned into these conditions, as it helps them anticipate when and where to make there cast. Timing is everything with permit, so patience and persistence are essential. It’s all about observing their movements and being ready to capitalize on the right moment.
What’s the most memorable catch you’ve witnessed while guiding for tarpon, and what made that experience stand out for you and your clients?
One of my most memorable catches happened early in my career. We had already landed two permits and a bonefish so we decided to go after a some migratory Tarpon. Just as we were about to call it quits, a massive school of about 80 tarpon appeared right behind the boat, taking us completely by surprise. Chaos ensued—a broken rod, lost sunglasses, and sheer adrenaline—but somehow, we managed to pull it all together and complete the grand slam. It was one of those unforgettable days on the water that reminds you why you love the sport.
Christian, what are your top 5 tips for new saltwater anglers looking to get started in flats fishing?
Practice your casting.
Always listen to your guide.
Invest in a good pair of polarized glasses.
Don’t forget plenty of sunscreen—seriously, you’ll thank me later.
Keep a sense of humor; flats fishing can be humbling, but that’s part of the fun!"
How do you adapt your guiding approach based on the varying skill levels of your clients, especially when targeting challenging species?
As a guide and angler, I know that many people have limited time to fish due to work commitments. That’s why I prioritize open communication from the start and, if needed, offer a quick casting lesson. Providing my clients with the right information helps them get as close to their goal as possible, making the experience more enjoyable and successful.
