Materials Needed:
Hook: Streamer hook, size 6-10.
Bead: Optional, brass or tungsten bead to match hook size.
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 thread in a suitable color (e.g., black, brown, or olive).
Tail: Marabou feathers (color of choice).
Body: Chenille or sparkle chenille (color of choice).
Flash: Flashabou or crystal flash (optional).
Hackle: Grizzly or saddle hackle (optional).
Weight: Lead wire (optional).
Step 1: Prepare the Hook
If using a bead, slide it onto the hook and secure it in place at the front of the hook shank. Start your thread wraps behind the bead, securing it firmly.
Step 2: Tie in the Tail
Select a few marabou feathers in the desired color for the tail. Measure them to about the length of the hook shank and tie them in at the bend of the hook, creating a tail that extends backward.
Step 3: Add Flash (Optional)
Cut a few strands of flashabou or crystal flash and tie them in on top of the tail, extending slightly beyond the marabou fibers for added flash and attraction.
Step 4: Form the Body
Tie in the chenille or sparkle chenille at the base of the tail and wrap your thread forward, stopping just behind the bead (if used). Now, wrap the chenille forward in tight, touching turns, creating a smooth body as you go. Tie off the chenille and trim any excess.
Step 5: Palmer the Hackle (Optional)
If desired, select a grizzly or saddle hackle and tie it in at the base of the tail. Palmer the hackle forward around the body in evenly spaced turns, ensuring the fibers sweep backward as you wrap. Tie off the hackle and trim any excess.
Step 6: Whip Finish and Trim
Finish the fly by making a whip finish with your tying thread behind the bead (if used) or behind the hook eye. Trim the excess thread and ensure all materials are securely fastened.
Step 7: Final Touches
After completing the fly, you can customize it further by adding weight to the fly (e.g., wrapping lead wire along the hook shank) or trimming the tail to your desired length. Experiment with different color combinations and variations to suit the fishing conditions and preferences.
Your Sparkle Bugger fly is now complete and ready to hit the water!
