How to Tie the Freshwater Popper Frogn | Fly Tying Tutorial
From: Svenddiesel
If you’re looking to bring a splash to your freshwater fly fishing, the Freshwater Popper Frog is a must-try. This lively and realistic pattern mimics the irresistible movements of a frog, making it perfect for attracting predatory fish.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare the Hook and Thread
Begin by placing a Partridge popper hook (size 2) in the vise.
Thread the hook with Simpler Fly Nano Silk (12/0). Build up a small bump behind the eye of the hook with your thread to help secure the popper head.
2. Attach the Popper Head
Use a sewing needle (large diameter, heated tip) to create a hole through the popper head.
Insert the needle through the popper head and into the hook eye.
Apply super glue to the hook shank and popper head to secure them in place.
Position the popper head at a slight angle for a natural frog look.
3. Create the Body Bump
Using flashy dubbing, create a small bump at the bend of the hook to separate the hackle fibers.
Wrap the thread carefully to secure the dubbing bump, ensuring it mimics the size of a tungsten bead.
4. Prepare the Legs
Select Whiting Farms Freshwater Streamer Hackle (dark grizzly olive) for the legs.
Take four feathers (two for each leg), and tie them in on the top of the hook shank.
Make sure the legs extend slightly beyond the bend of the hook, and position them at a 45-degree angle from the shank.
Trim the legs so they are symmetrical.
5. Tie in the Hackle
Prepare two hackle feathers from the Freshwater Streamer Hackle (green color), leaving the tip exposed.
Tie in the hackle by the tip, ensuring they follow the same direction as the legs.
Palmer the hackle around the hook shank, building a body towards the popper head.
6. Finish the Fly
Secure the hackle with a whip finish at the front of the popper head.
Trim any excess hackle stems.
Apply a small amount of UV resin to the belly to secure the body and legs.
7. Final Adjustments
Spread out the legs to the desired position and check their symmetry.
If needed, adjust the hackle and legs to ensure the fly has a natural appearance when floating.
