How to tie: a Disco Midge

The Disco Midge is a simple yet effective fly, perfect for imitating small midges. It's quick to tie and ideal for targeting trout in clear waters.

Materials List:

  • Hook: Size 20

  • Thread: Pink

  • Body: Pearlescent tinsel

  • Thorax: Peacock herl

Steps

  1. Prepare the Hook

    • Start with a size 20 hook and attach pink thread at the base of the hook shank, working toward the bend.

  2. Add the Tinsel

    • Tie in a strand of pearlescent tinsel at the hook bend.

    • Wrap the thread smoothly back up the hook shank to create a smooth, even body.

  3. Wrap the Tinsel

    • Carefully wrap the tinsel forward, making sure it doesn’t catch on the hook point.

    • Once you reach the thorax area, secure the tinsel with a few wraps of thread and trim the excess.

  4. Attach the Peacock Herl

    • Tie in a strand of peacock herl, selecting one with shorter fibers to keep the proportions balanced.

    • Wrap the herl to form a small thorax, then secure it with thread.

  5. Finish the Fly

    • Whip finish your thread behind the eye, adding a small hot spot by moving the whip finish slightly back over the peacock herl.

    • Trim the thread, and your Disco Midge is ready to fish!
