How to tie: a Jujubee Midge

With : InTheRiffle

The Jujube Midge is a simple yet highly effective fly pattern, perfect for tailwaters and widely used for trout fishing in the West

Materials List:

  • Hook: Dry fly hook, size 14-20

  • Thread: White thread for the body; Black thread for the thorax

  • Body: Super Hair (2 strands red, 1 strand black)

  • Wing Case and Legs: White Florafiber (or Antron/Darlon)

Steps:

  1. Start the Thread:

    • Attach your white thread near the eye of the hook. This will be used to build the body.

  2. Tie in Super Hair:

    • Use three strands of Super Hair: two red strands (or your preferred color) and one black strand for the ribbing.

    • Secure the Super Hair at the bend of the hook and wrap your thread back toward the eye.

  3. Build the Body:

    • Wrap the white thread forward in smooth, even wraps to create the body of the fly.

    • Then, begin wrapping the Super Hair around the hook, ensuring the first wrap extends slightly around the bend.

    • Hold the Super Hair tight and continue wrapping, scooting it down the hook shank to create even, gap-free wraps.

  4. Secure the Super Hair:

    • Once you’ve wrapped the Super Hair to the thorax, capture it with your white thread and trim the excess.

  5. Switch to Black Thread:

    • Prepare a bobbin with black thread, tie it in while holding the white thread and the black tag end.

    • Wrap the black thread over the white thread and trim both the white thread and black tag.

  6. Add the Wing Case and Legs:

    • Tie in some white Florafiber (or substitute materials like Antron or Darlon) on top of the fly, positioned over the thorax.

    • Wrap the thread back about a third of the way from the hook eye, then forward again to the eye.

  7. Create the Wing Case:

    • Pull the Florafiber over the top of the fly to form a wing case. Secure it with a couple of wraps.

  8. Form the Legs:

    • Split the Florafiber into two even clumps.

    • Pull one clump to one side of the hook and secure with a wrap. Repeat on the other side for the second clump to form the legs.

  9. Finish the Fly:

    • Whip finish the fly and trim the legs just slightly longer than the thorax.
