How to tie: a Beadhead Pat’s Rubber Legs
Today, The Northern Angler Fly Shop is tying the classic Beadhead Pat's Rubber Legs, a must-have stonefly imitation that’s simple, effective, and incredibly durable. This fly is perfect for nymphing, and it’s quick to tie, so you’ll have plenty of them in your box for any fishing situation. Let’s dive in!
Materials:
Hook: Daiichi 1730 Bent Shank Nymph Hook (Size 6)
Bead: 3/16 Tungsten Bead
Thread (Front): Viva 6/0 (Hot Orange)
Thread (Back): Viva 140 Denier (Black)
Chenille: Stonefly Chenille (Black/Brown)
Legs: Medium Barred Sexy Floss (Black/Brown)
Lead Wire: .025 (8 wraps)
UV Resin: (Optional, for durability)
UV Light: Loon Infinity Light (or similar)
Steps:
Start the Thread:
Secure your hook in the vise. Start your Viva 6/0 thread right behind the bead and wrap it down the shank to minimize bulk at the front.
Attach the Legs:
Take a piece of Sexy Floss and fold it around the hook so the ends are even. Secure with several wraps, making sure to maintain good tension to keep the legs flat.
Add the Lead Wire:
Wrap .025 lead wire around the hook shank near the bead to add weight and give the fly a jig-like presentation. Secure it with thread.
Tie in the Body:
Take the Stonefly Chenille, expose the core, and tie it in at the back of the hook. Wrap the chenille forward to create a smooth, tapered body.
Attach More Legs:
Add another set of Sexy Floss legs, using the same fold technique. Wrap the legs around the body, ensuring they’re positioned correctly for maximum movement.
Finish the Fly:
Whip finish at the head and trim the thread. Optionally, apply a coat of UV resin to secure the thread wraps and increase durability. Cure with a UV light.
Trim the Legs:
Trim the legs to your desired length, aiming for about shank length from the bead. Less is more, so trim a little at a time for the perfect length.
And there you have it—a durable, easy-to-tie Pat's Rubber Legs that’s ready to fish!
